The COVID-19 pandemic has led many couples to postpone their weddings to the following year. However, with persistent uncertainty, some are opting for smaller ceremonies. In light of this, it is important for couples to consider several key factors and preparations.
First, discuss with your contracted venue to understand the possibilities of adjusting or canceling your reservation. If cancellation is not an option, consider postponing to a later date. A smaller ceremony could be held at home, an outdoor venue, or an outdoor restaurant with family and close friends, while live streaming for those unable to attend. Couples might consider a simple event with a ceremony followed by a first dance, cake cutting, and a few games.
Efforts should be made to wear masks and avoid serving food directly. To maintain social distancing, arrange seating by family at mealtime (30” round table for couples, 40” for four-person families, 60” for six-person families), allocating 36-50 square feet per person. For a 3,000-square-foot space, approximately 60-80 people can be accommodated. Include the wedding service personnel (makeup, hair, dress, floral, photography, DJ, MC, venue staff, planner) in the venue's capacity restrictions. Consider providing to-go boxes with simple food and snacks.
Place hand sanitizers throughout the venue. Encourage guests to check their temperature the evening before the wedding and inform the couple if they exhibit any COVID-19 symptoms, advising them politely via email not to attend if unwell.
Consider holding a simple ceremony this year and organizing a larger party for a one or two-year anniversary celebration once the pandemic situation has improved.
