In our everyday language, we describe a harmonious and deeply affectionate relationship between spouses as having "good geum-seul." This phrase originates from musical instruments in ancient China: the geum (琴), known for its clear melody, and the seul (瑟), celebrated for its rich tones. The harmony created by these instruments symbolizes the perfect harmony of a married couple.

Today, Mom & I features two individuals who, like the geum and seul, create harmonious music and life together: violinists Khullip Jeong and Jisun Kang. We share their beautiful journey in music and life with our readers.

A Musical Symphony in Marriage

Khullip Jeong

A violinist with a Master's degree from the Juilliard School, Jeong has served as an adjunct professor at Juilliard Pre-College, Mannes School of Music, and BMCC. As a music director at Good Neighbor Ensemble for nine years and through roles in organizations like Love Violin USA and BeneSori Music Foundation, Jeong has been a prominent figure in international music festivals.

Born in Hawaii at age five, he was exposed to music early, following his elder brother's footsteps in violin under Catherine Lucktenberg's guidance. The child prodigy performed with the Honolulu Symphony at nine, juggling music practice and helping at his parents' restaurant. At 15, he moved to New York to study seriously, as a scholarship holder at Juilliard's Pre-College, where he was mentored by esteemed professors. Currently, he plays an influential role in nurturing future musicians.

Jisun Kang

Kang's journey began with the piano in Korea and shifted to the violin in England at age nine. Recognized for her remarkable talent, she performed with the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra at 13. After graduating in music from Seoul National University and completing her master's at Juilliard, she co-founded BeneSori Music Foundation and 4Strings Music Festival with her husband.

Love and Music: A Shared Journey

Both professors reflect on their serendipitous meeting during their master's auditions. Kang recalls being drawn to Jeong's comforting presence, contrasting with her initial cultural adjustment. Jeong stayed on campus during winter break, allowing their relationship to blossom organically. They married the day after their graduate ceremony.

Their children, a fifth-grade son and a second-grade daughter, both enjoy playing the violin. The couple encourages their musical pursuits, emphasizing the transcendent joy music can bring, echoing Elgar's "Nimrod."

The Couple's Musical Connection

When asked who embodies the geum and who the seul in their home, Kang acknowledges Jeong's meticulous nature, while Jeong values Kang's supportive presence. Despite a busy schedule filled with teaching and personal commitments, they continuously engage in music and family discussions to foster their children's growth.

Professional Endeavors and Musical Philosophy

Both Jeong and Kang emphasize passion, dedication, and continuous self-assessment as key attributes for a successful musician. Their teaching philosophies highlight encouragement and patience, focusing on nurturing a well-rounded, artistic environment.

Participating in ensembles and music camps is seen as essential for musicians to develop a broader understanding and experience. Jeong's 4Strings Music Festival demonstrates their commitment to comprehensive music education.

Future Aspirations

Jeong and Kang aim to release albums, actively perform, and inspire through teaching and music festivals. They express a desire to grow both as musicians and individuals, continuing to share the joy of music with wider audiences.

Jeong’s earlier albums reflect a personal journey, and both professors are eager to produce new works that capture their artistic evolution.

This intimate conversation with the violinist couple offers insights into the delicate art of balancing personal and professional lives, leaving a lasting impact on both their students and music lovers alike. Mom & I looks forward to witnessing their future ensembles on stage.
