Since her debut in 1989, star actress Shin Ae-ra has captivated the public with her stunning appearance and lovable performances. However, what truly makes her shine is her life of giving, exemplified through adopting two daughters and sponsoring children in third-world countries. Currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Christian education in the U.S., she remains committed to sharing love as an ambassador for the child development organization Compassion.
Meeting Shin Ae-ra at the 11th "I Love Nanum" Gala Event hosted by the New York Sharing Foundation, she expressed her desire to be a "good mother" to children everywhere who need support.
As a Compassion Korea ambassador, Shin has personally met children suffering from poverty in countries such as the Philippines, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Haiti, supporting over 50 children. Her first vision trip to the Philippines in 2005 deeply moved her, teaching her the true meaning of happiness despite seeing children smiling under challenging circumstances.
Together with her husband, actor Cha In-pyo, Shin Ae-ra is recognized as a model couple known for their charitable work, sharing love and kindness, and living a life of fulfillment and happiness.
Mam & I: Your philanthropy is well known, especially your dedication to children. Is there a particular reason for your focus on children?
Shin Ae-ra: I believe my talent is my love for children (smiles). Everyone has their own causes close to heart. For me, it is the children who lack proper care and rights. I often feel drawn to them.
Mam & I: Attending the New York Sharing Foundation event, what message do you wish to convey to the Korean community?
Shin Ae-ra: Many see 'sharing' as grand, but it’s not. Financially able individuals might give donations, which is great, but anyone can share time and energy, which is volunteering. Sharing unique talents is another form of giving. I believe very few have nothing to offer. There are always those around who need more than we do.
Mam & I: As parents supporting many children worldwide, what's your education philosophy for your own children?
Shin Ae-ra: We hope our children never lose their sense of walking with God, gaining peace and strength knowing He is always with them. We encourage them to think independently, make their own decisions, and take responsibility for their actions.
Mam & I: Does your emphasis on autonomy mean you refrain from scolding?
Shin Ae-ra: Oh no, we scold like any parents! (laughs). We teach good behavior but avoid imposing our expectations. Instead, we help them discover their talents and support what brings them joy.
A graduate of Chung-Ang University’s Department of Theater and Film, Shin Ae-ra debuted in 1989 with MBC's drama "Choice of an Angel." Over the years, she has starred in numerous dramas and won the Excellence Award at the 2011 MBC Drama Awards. Married to fellow actor Cha In-pyo in 1995, the couple has a son, Jung-min, and adopted daughters Ye-eun and Ye-jin. Praised as a "beautiful couple" for their contributions to society, they received various awards for good deeds and volunteer work. As an ambassador for Compassion, Shin Ae-ra embarks on a new philanthropic journey, reaching out to children in Africa, Latin America, and the Philippines.
