New York Korean Association President Kim Min-seon did not embark on her political journey with the intention of becoming the president. Initially, she pursued a career in education, with a degree in violin from Ewha Womans University and experience as an educator in Long Island. Observing her children's challenges in school, she was motivated to initiate a Korean Parents Association in their school district to support Korean students and promote Korean culture.
Upon taking charge as chairperson of the New York Korean Association, Kim faced significant challenges related to financial transparency and management. She tackled these issues with resolve, restructuring the association's governance and addressing critical events, including the attempted sale of the association's building. Her efforts led to improvements in the association’s structure, fostering transparency and accountability.
Under Kim’s leadership, plans were set for a Korean Immigration History Museum and a multi-purpose space within the association's Manhattan premises. Her transparent operations and passion for the community were evident, achieving $500,000 in fundraising for the museum project.
Kim’s educational philosophy, rooted in fostering confidence and positivity in children, was central to her approach as both a mother and an educator. Her dedication ensured her children thrived academically and personally, with both attending Brown University.
Kim, inspired from an early age by the movie "The Sound of Music," has consistently pursued her dream of music education. Believing success lies in fulfilling one’s personal goals rather than external evaluations, she aims to leave a lasting legacy by establishing the Korean Immigration History Museum.
Now, as a leader whose work transcends racial, gender, and age boundaries, Kim Min-seon of the New York Korean Association stands ready to drive forward, bringing hope and renewal to the organization and its community.
