A new landmark has emerged in one of New Jersey's prominent Korean enclaves, Palisades Park. The spotlight is on Kudo Society, which opened its first location on Central Boulevard and its second location this past February on Broad Avenue. The venue has taken over the former sites of the historic 'Eagle Diner' and 'Crown,' offering a multi-faceted space where patrons can enjoy premium coffee, haute cuisine by Executive Chef Peter Ingraslino, as well as alcoholic beverages and entertainment.

Spanning 8,500 square feet with seating for 170, Kudo Society welcomes individuals of all nationalities and ages to enjoy a comfortable atmosphere.

An Interview with Kudo Society

Editor: Kudo Society is already known as a café. What inspired the expansion to a larger multi-purpose space?

Kudo Society began in 1992 when my husband was first introduced to espresso and beans and then shared this passion with me. We started offering food when we opened our first store in Manhattan in 2003. With the opening of our second location on Broad Avenue, we aimed to provide more food options and beverages. We hope to establish this as a space for families, friends, and couples—not just a specific age group. It's what we call a multi-purpose space, suitable for American breakfasts, brunch, nightlife, karaoke, and more.

What prompted you to open this second location?

As any businessperson, we dream of expansion and always consider the next location. We are considering franchise opportunities as well. Kudo Society's strength lies in offering more than just coffee or fixed sandwiches; we plan to customize each venue according to local needs—be it as a café or a bubble tea shop—and have already received inquiries about franchising, although we are currently holding off.

Could you describe your establishment further?

Previously, this spot housed a diner, and many locals miss having a diner here. We wanted to cater to those cravings by offering not only American diner food but also Korean cuisine alongside premium coffee. Our establishment allows families to dine together for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and appeals to parents who may want to enjoy an evening drink. The venue is ideal for large gatherings. The interior blends nature with comfort, varying its ambiance between day and night.

Have you encountered challenges or successes since opening?

Customer management is always challenging. While the taste of food is vital, managing customer relationships is equally crucial. Feedback from patrons helps us enhance our food quality and overall restaurant standards. I'm grateful for the over 20 staff members who contribute to a family-like atmosphere and exhibit excellent teamwork. Balancing business demands with parenting is difficult, but it’s rewarding to see our children manage well under busy parents.

Any menu recommendations at Kudo?

While all our dishes are delicious (laughs), for breakfast, the traditional American breakfast is a hit. In the evening, we recommend the jumbo pork cutlet for kids, seafood cream udon or pasta for women, and the seafood rice crust soup for seniors.

Any final words?

Even though we serve alcohol, children are very much welcome here. Our establishment's name, Kudo Society—'Kudo' signifying praise and encouragement and 'Society' meaning community—reflects our hope that everyone visits with joy. On a personal note, my spouse and I have a light-hearted goal to open a new store every two years, and we aim to achieve that.

Kudo Society offers unique coffee, desserts, and karaoke entertainment for all ages. Until the end of May, patrons have the chance to win an iPad, AirPods, and more. Additionally, customers who enjoy the $50,000 cocktail by Tattoo Tequila may win a motorcycle valued at $100,000.
