Overcoming Challenges with Determination

"Graduating from Parsons and finding a job was as difficult as picking stars from the sky. I had no connections, and the competition with formidable American designers was intense. However, I always exuded confidence. I boldly declared, ‘Trust me!’ and responded energetically, ‘I can do anything!’ This positive energy was acknowledged, and small opportunities began to open up, boosting my confidence. I always passionately enjoyed my work, and I still love what I do."

Captivating New Yorkers with Unique Style

Kay Lee, Successful Fashion Entrepreneur and CEO of OTTE

Kay Lee, a thriving fashion entrepreneur and the CEO of OTTE, has established three successful fashion boutiques in New York, the world’s fashion capital. With an impressive annual turnover of $15 million, OTTE draws top stars like Sarah Jessica Parker, Sienna Miller, and Gwyneth Paltrow as regular customers. We delve into her 20-year journey of relentless work, life, and passion.

Never Give Up: A Motto Engraved in Her Heart

Lacking fluency in English, without ample parental support, and with no relatives to assist her locally, Kay Lee still aspired to be in New York. The city's unrivaled fashion energy was a magnetic force for her. Armed only with her inherently optimistic attitude, the 23-year-old Korean college student courageously entered Parsons The New School for Design. Despite facing discrimination and challenges, she never wavered in her determination, even when friends quit saying, "I give up!"

Running Three Stores and Attracting Hollywood Stars

Kay Lee's compelling story is about leading a successful business in New York's competitive fashion environment. With three prime store locations and an online shop, OTTE achieves an annual revenue of $15 million. After graduating from Sungkyunkwan University with a degree in Fashion Studies, Lee moved to New York with a singular drive to succeed. Originally focusing on designer clothes and accessory buying, she expanded her business to produce her brand's apparel. OTTE is renowned among Hollywood stars, with numerous celebrities frequently visiting.

Positive Energy Breeds Opportunities

When asked about her success, Lee attributes it to her boundless enthusiasm and self-confidence. Her belief that positive energy leads to opportunities is a mantra she lives by professionally and personally. Recently, OTTE has launched a personalized styling service, which has been well-received, allowing customers to try high-end attire before purchase.

OTTE's Vision: Comfort Meets Trend

OTTE is committed to providing daily wear that is comfortable yet imbued with a trendy touch. The store is celebrated not only in Hollywood but also among Korea’s fashion circles for its keen sense of style.

Perseverance in Buying and Brand Development

The first OTTE store opened in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in 1999. Transitioning from a designer role to becoming her own boss required immense responsibility, effort, and sacrifice. Lee meticulously selects and purchases items herself, a process demanding fashion foresight and dedication. Her success in incorporating designers like Alexander Wang into her store exemplifies her hands-on approach.

Styling for Modern Life: Comfort with Edge

Lee's buying principle is simple: provide everyone with comfortable daily clothes that still carry distinct style and personality. OTTE embodies a vibe of understated chic, offering clothes that appeal to the fashionable New Yorker. Personally, Lee enjoys the simplicity of denim styling paired with a stylish top and jacket, mirroring the essence of OTTE.

Expanding with OTTE's Own Brand

In recent years, OTTE has introduced a line of in-house designed dresses, reflecting its evolving offerings.

Personalized Styling Service: A Hit Among Customers

Despite the rise of online shopping, many customers prefer the tactile experience of trying clothes in-store. To cater to this, OTTE has enhanced its personal styling services, offering personalized outfit recommendations and tracking customer preferences.

Balancing Work and Personal Life

Despite her substantial success, Lee remains humble, attributing her achievements to those who supported her. She continues to passionately work, exploring leisure activities like reading, cooking, and dating her boyfriend. “My boyfriend advises me to relax and enjoy life more, a mindset I am grateful for.”

Kay Lee: A Continuous Journey of Happiness and Growth

Lee's philosophy centers on persistence, avoiding impatience, not fixating on numbers, and staying positive. This mindset fuels her personal and professional growth, with her happiness being a work in progress.

Kay Lee graduated from Sungkyunkwan University, furthered her studies at Parsons The New School for Design, and had various designer roles before founding OTTE in 1999. She currently manages three offline and one online store, alongside an in-house apparel production line.
