In 2003, rumors circulated about a massive entertainment complex slated for East Rutherford, New Jersey. After 16 years of anticipation, the American Dream Meadowlands project is finally nearing completion, with an official opening announced. Among those contributing their talents to this ambitious endeavor is Korean interior designer Yoonjung Kang. Known for her distinctive passion for design, she stands as the only Korean designer on the project. We met with Ms. Kang onsite at American Dream, alongside her daughter Riah, to discuss her inspiring journey and the unique allure of this development.
Yoonjung Kang, an interior designer, introduces herself: "Hello, I’m Yoonjung Kang, an interior designer with 13 years of experience in retail design. I live with my husband, a scientist at Qualcomm, and our 21-month-old daughter Riah."
She moved to the U.S. for her studies, explaining, "I came to the U.S. just in time for high school. Despite my parents' initial resistance, my passion for art propelled me to pursue it. I studied at Fryeburg Academy in Maine and later at Pratt Institute's Design School."
Post-graduation, Kang embarked on her career in New York at TPG Architecture. She managed projects for renowned firms like Equinox, L'Oreal, and British Airways at JFK Airport, among others. Her journey continued with Callison, working with brands including Victoria's Secret and Tiffany & Co. Currently, she serves as a Store Design & 3D Visualization Consultant Manager at Calvin Klein and is a key member of the American Dream design team.
Kang details her current role: "Our design team handles all interior aspects of American Dream. We collaborate with various brands to ensure that their design criteria align with our vision. This environment offers me vast experiences and learning opportunities. It's akin to being given a large canvas to create a masterpiece."
She elaborates on the attraction of the project: "American Dream is not just a mall; it's a new concept of shopping plus entertainment. It offers a comprehensive entertainment experience for families, making it an ideal destination for spending quality time together."
Kang discusses her design philosophy: "My belief is to create designs that move hearts. Given the diverse brands here, my aim is to create harmony while maximizing the distinctiveness of each brand."
Kang shares her approach to balancing career and family: "Riah, my daughter, is outgoing and sociable. Though we can't spend much daytime together, we devote our evenings entirely to her. My hope is for her to appreciate and enjoy the spaces I've designed, and eventually become a friend."
Looking ahead, Kang expresses her goals: "While my job is fulfilling, my ultimate aim as a designer is to pursue ‘art’ over financial gain. I hope my fellow Koreans seize the opportunities available with the American Dream team."
American Dream Meadowlands is poised to redefine entertainment and retail by offering 450 retail shops, themed parks, and unique attractions like the largest indoor ski resort and water park in North America. This mega-project, under the Triple Five Group, promises transformative experiences that extend beyond shopping.
