The task of visiting a hospital is seldom welcomed, whether for a healthy individual or a patient suffering from illness. While healthy individuals may not feel the necessity to meet with a physician, patients in need of treatment often find themselves burdened with mental and physical challenges. Despite the unpleasantness associated with hospital visits, patients may find some comfort when their attending physician fosters a relationship based on understanding and close communication, aiming for long-term health management.
At Park Medical Hospital in Fort Lee, Seulkih Shin M.D., a family medicine specialist, emphasizes the importance of regular health check-ups and management by a dedicated family doctor for a healthy life. Dr. Shin highlights the relatively unfamiliar concept of family physicians in the Korean community and the role of a family medicine doctor in managing both individual and familial health comprehensively. Below is a Q&A with Seulkih Shin M.D..
I completed my undergraduate studies at Cornell University and graduated from St. George University Medical School. Subsequently, I completed a residency in Family Medicine at Mountainside Hospital and have been working at Park Medical Hospital and Englewood Hospital for approximately two years.
While I majored in Family Medicine, my current medical practice is similar to internal medicine in a broader context. In rural areas with fewer hospitals, the role of a family medicine specialist is significant. However, in large cities with numerous hospitals, we serve as primary care physicians. My choice to specialize in Family Medicine was influenced by the opportunity to manage the health of patients of all ages and entire families. Additionally, my first mentor, whom I deeply respected, was a family physician, leaving a profound impact on me. Witnessing the care provided to entire families inspired me. Though the main services of Family Medicine overlap with internal medicine, we can also cater to children and provide gynecological care. At Park Medical Hospital, however, we only treat patients aged 18 and above, closely resembling general internal medicine. Services include basic examinations, diabetes management, hypertension treatment, cholesterol management, gynecological care, and more. Many female patients appreciate the comprehensive care, as I am a female physician.
In areas like Palisades Park or Fort Lee, where the Korean population is dense, we primarily encounter diabetes and hypertension. High cholesterol is also a common issue. The root causes include lifestyle and dietary habits. Korean diets are typically rich in carbohydrates and sodium, contributing to these health problems. Lack of exercise and genetic predispositions are additional factors. Research indicates that Asians have a higher prevalence of diabetes compared to other ethnicities.
The essentials for maintaining good health include a balanced diet and regular exercise. A diet rich in fresh vegetables and fish, maintaining nutritional balance, and regular exercise to maintain proper body weight are crucial. However, the most critical aspect is regular health check-ups. It is vital to undergo basic examinations annually, including breast and cervical cancer screenings for women, and osteoporosis screenings for post-menopausal women. From a family medicine perspective, disease is significantly influenced by family history, necessitating thorough consultations and communication with physicians.
Many unverified medical information sources exist on the internet, leading to patients trusting media over professional advice. While informed patients can ease the diagnostic process, when media information is prioritized over professional advice, it creates challenges. I strive to correct misconceptions and provide accurate information through counseling.
I've observed that older adults tend to care more about their health, while younger individuals often neglect it. Young women, in particular, juggling work and parenting, lack the mental space to prioritize their health. However, maintaining good health is crucial for fulfilling one's role as a mother and family member. Women should regularly visit for general examinations, cervical cancer screenings, breast exams, and more. We also offer pregnancy control support. As a female physician, patients feel comfortable with me, enhancing my interactions with them. I encourage a friendly relationship with your physician for optimal health management.
