Hackensack Meridian Carrier Clinic has been honored by the New Jersey Hospital Association (NJHA) earlier this year for its efforts in reducing medical disparities in New Jersey's behavioral health services. Carrier Clinic, renowned for its innovative programs and community engagement aimed at addressing the psychological impacts of COVID-19, is a private, non-profit behavioral health care system established in 1910 specializing in psychiatry and addiction treatment. Its diverse range of specialized treatments, including inpatient, residential, and educational services, strives to reintegrate patients into daily life promptly.
Carrier Clinic offers comprehensive psychiatric acute care services, including general adult psychiatry and dual diagnosis, geriatric psychiatry and dual diagnosis (ages 65 and over), general adult group, and broad services.
The Blake Recovery Center, a state-licensed standalone residential alcohol and drug abuse treatment program, has provided residential rehabilitation for patients suffering from addiction and psychiatric complications since its inception in 1981. Alongside inpatient services, Carrier recommends intensive outpatient programs for patients struggling with chemical dependency, helping them overcome addiction while maintaining their work and home life. The 12-step recovery program educates about addiction diseases and prevents relapses.
Carrier Clinic’s adolescent psychiatric and dual diagnosis inpatient services cater to those aged 12 to 18 in need of intensive short-term treatment for acute psychiatric and dual diagnosis disorders. Incorporating individual and group psychotherapy with mental education, family meetings are included to develop discharge plans. Group therapy focuses on evaluating emotions and devising strategies to cope with strong feelings.
Offering continuous offsite therapeutic services for adolescents aged 13 to 18, the Youth Lodge provides comprehensive clinical treatment for emotional, behavioral, psychological, and substance abuse issues around the clock. All programs are conducted in collaboration with the New Jersey Department of Children and Families (DCF) and encompass various service levels defined by New Jersey’s therapeutic system.
This program delivers the most intense offsite therapeutic care. Composed of 12 mixed groups, it transitions patients receiving intensive inpatient therapy to a less restrictive environment before returning home. Swan Lodge residents require the highest level of intensive care and supervision within the state’s treatment system.
Established in 1980 as part of the Carrier Clinic group, East Mountain School is a state-approved private special education institution for students in grades 7 through 12 classified with emotional or behavioral disorders. The school offers a secure, challenging, and enriching educational environment, fostering patient needs while encouraging growth, development, and effective utilization of learning opportunities.
Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), offered as both inpatient and outpatient services, is a highly effective treatment for depression and other mental disorders. It involves a small electrical charge delivered to the brain to induce seizure activity, thereby rectifying imbalances in brain centers responsible for sleep, appetite, mood, and thought processes, stabilizing patients from mental illness. Apart from patient treatment and hospital environment improvement, Carrier Clinic actively engages in community service. Since January 2019, they have hosted public radio shows discussing topics like opioid abuse prevention and mental health service access. Additionally, the clinic has expanded mental health first-aid training to first responders and the public and initiated monthly webinars on various behavioral health issues, dedicated to making meaningful changes in community life.
