"Inspiring dreams and a spirit of challenge in students, and planting seeds of sharing and action in the community."

Beginning a new initiative can be daunting, as the saying "starting is half the battle" suggests. However, maintaining momentum may be even more challenging. Especially for philanthropic endeavors sustained without specific sponsorship or fundraising, a unique philosophy and dedication are requisite. Founded in 2012, the Andrew Park Scholarship Foundation marks its eighth year and now extends opportunities to international students without restrictions. We spoke with the foundation's founder, Andrew Park, to delve into this pivotal journey.

Introduction to the Andrew Park Scholarship Foundation

Launched in 2012, the Andrew Park Scholarship Foundation bears my name and was established to support students. For the first six years, we selected scholars based on academic performance, essays, and recommendations, providing them with scholarships. Last year, we shifted focus, selecting two music students to compose pieces themed on the works of ‘Yi Yuksa,’ presenting them at Lincoln Center, which was well received. Annually, we strive to make the scholarship initiative more enjoyable, meaningful, and sophisticated.

2019 Selection Process for Andrew Park Scholars

This year, we will revert to selecting 12 students through essays, each receiving a scholarship of $2,000. An exciting aspect is offering opportunities to international students via my I Heart Media radio show. This is likely a pioneering step for a Korean-managed scholarship foundation to enter foreign markets. Promoting the scholarship is essential, but there are limited channels to reach foreign markets. However, with I Heart Media’s audience of 200,000 nationwide, it’s a great opportunity. The essay topic this year is particularly engaging: "Korean Figures." Applicants will write about a Korean figure they admire, offering a chance to introduce Korean history and culture. I am eager to see which Korean personalities international students will choose and look forward to their insights.

Philosophy and Beliefs Driving the Andrew Park Scholarship Foundation

In our eighth year since inception, we take pride in our consistent management of the foundation. Relying on government support or funds might not have allowed for such stable development. The funds I personally contribute are a testament to the foundation's integrity. As a former scholarship recipient, I view this as an investment in future generations and a component of educational upbringing. I wish to demonstrate to my son not merely the success of a prosperous lawyer, but the importance of aiding others, showcasing the act of giving without burden.

Social Activities Beyond the Scholarship Initiative

In January, I launched a weekly program every Saturday evening from 7–8 p.m. on the major U.S. radio network I Heart Media. It tackles a variety of topics, primarily legal advice, while also promoting Korean history and culture to mainstream American society. This initiative has been well-received.

In February, I visited Kangwon University on invitation, joining as a member of the North-South Exchange Council, which is a significant role. I also give annual special lectures there, sharing insights on U.S. law, and showcasing the achievements of Korean expatriates as a professional and a Korean. Despite various activities, fundamentally, I am an accident lawyer. Andrew Park Law Firm, often mistaken for a solo practice, includes over 30 lawyers and staff, serving a diverse clientele beyond the Korean community.

Family Time and Vacation Plans

My wife, a travel enthusiast, ensures several family trips annually. Our summer plans include Switzerland and Italy next month, followed by Korea and Sapporo, Japan in November. Travel doesn’t always require distant, exotic locales; frequent trips add great value to family life. Earning money is not the ultimate success—creating cherished memories with family is paramount. As readers of Mam & I, primarily wives, I encourage wise and playful leadership in encouraging their husbands to embrace travel.

Words of Encouragement to Aspiring Scholars

I urge young aspirants to dream and challenge themselves. My advertisements are engaging, reflecting my belief in seizing opportunities for unique adventures. Whether in professional pursuits or endeavors like marriage—when someone catches your eye, take the plunge and ‘challenge’ it. Remember, the key lies in the dream you wish to achieve and the courage to pursue it.
