In a world where immigrant mothers often feel isolated, and fathers struggle with the pressures of difficult work environments, music becomes a bridge connecting diverse souls. 'Nanum Orchestra' was born from the collective spirit of those who, despite playing different instruments, unite with the shared joy of giving. Driven by a passionate love for music and sharing, they weave melodies that touch hearts.
Throughout my years in the United States, I encountered many individuals frustrated with their experiences. The challenge of mastering English and the occasional feeling of being overlooked due to their Asian heritage are common sentiments among immigrants. As parents, the question of whether this path truly benefits their children lingers. The hardships of immigrant life often lead to questions about whether it was the right choice.
Many struggle to identify their hobbies or how to spend their newfound free time. Aiming to provide a joyful, musical outlet, I founded the 'Nanum Orchestra' over a decade ago. Our goal was to learn instruments together, rehearse, and perform, contributing our talents to the community.
Since its establishment in 2005, 'Nanum Orchestra' has hosted a variety of performances beyond our regular concerts. Themes have included 'Our Proud Country,' 'Mom, I'm Sorry,' and 'Giving is Receiving.' Moreover, we’ve held over 40 concerts, including fundraising events for establishing a hospital for depression patients and the Independence Memorial Hall. In June, we plan to present a charity musical titled 'Building Dreams for the Disabled.'
Despite the challenges, our members support each other, and now, alongside several professional instructors, 40 performers diligently practice. Anyone interested can join us to learn or teach any instrument used in the orchestra.
One particularly memorable performance focused on celebrating 'Our Proud Country,' musically revisiting pivotal historical events of Korea. It was a proud moment to teach our children about our nation's achievements and remarkable progress.
Our performance titled 'Mom, I'm Sorry,' dedicated to Mother’s Day, was profoundly touching. Everyone cherishes a heartfelt connection to their 'mother,' often a haven for the soul. This performance expressed the unsaid, deeply held sentiments we carry for our mothers through music and drama.
Another touching moment involved a member who joined the orchestra while pregnant. Her child, born and raised during her tenure, now plays the violin and has performed on stage twice.
We proudly identify as a volunteer organization and are registered as such, even able to award the 'Obama Volunteer Award.' Anyone willing to share their talents through dedicated practice is welcome to join. If you cherish the idea of sharing your music without focus on personal gain, you will create beautiful memories with us.
We warmly welcome everyone, regardless of conditions or restrictions, to participate comfortably and freely if they wish to share kindness through music.
Our vision seeks continued development. While financial considerations are ongoing, we aim to dismantle preconceived notions and foster a community hungry for musical sharing and growth.
Our dream is to create an environment where people, regardless of age or background, unite like family to produce warm and beautiful music. We kindly ask for your continued support of 'Nanum Orchestra' and our mission.
