In 2015, the Elga Wimmer Chelsea Gallery hosted a group exhibition themed around "LOVE." Among the participating artists was photographer HeeJung Cho, whose unique perspective brings warmth to everyday life through her camera.

Capturing Warmth Through a Cold Lens

Photographer HeeJung Cho is engaged in the LOVE PROJECT, capturing the beauty in ordinary moments that surround her. Her heartfelt view of the world shines through in her photography.

Interview with HeeJung Cho

Mom&I: When did you start taking photos, and was there a special reason or memory that inspired you?

As a child, I inherited an old film camera from my grandfather, and I've been documenting moments with it ever since. In 2006, while working in Japan, I was inspired by the art and culture I encountered, particularly the work of filmmaker Shunji Iwai. His use of color and lighting in films like "Love Letter" greatly influenced me. The spontaneous and touching moments I observed, like couples on the street or a child's smile, left a lasting impression, leading me to document them through photography.

Mom&I: Your exhibitions often center on the theme of "LOVE." How did you choose this theme, and what does "LOVE" mean to you?

The "LOVE" theme emerged during my travels to places like Japan and New York. Amid the busy city life, I found comfort in the concept of love. My photos often feature joyous interactions among family and friends. I believe love is ever-present, and experiencing it is as intense as feeling the sun. Whenever I discover a moment of intense beauty, even in darkness, I aim to capture it warmly and deeply through my photos. I hope those who view my work feel this love too.

Mom&I: Aside from exhibitions, you also create products like stationery and calendars. Could you share more about this aspect of your work?

After arriving in New York, I wanted to share the precious scenes I captured with a wider audience. Drawing on my experience in product planning in Korea, I collaborate with designers to bring these products to life. My items are available at places like Brooklyn's "Powerhouse Arena" and Korea's Kyobo Bookstore, as well as online stores like Tenbyten and 1300k. We also export to Canada and Australia. This year's new releases will include card sets and photo calendars centered on themes like "Coffee" and "Flower."

The Camera and the Moment

The old camera from her grandfather provided HeeJung Cho with the warmest energy to capture the world with a compassionate eye.

Past Exhibitions

  • In 2014, she showcased the LOVE PROJECT at "The Powerhouse Arena" in Brooklyn.

HeeJung Cho's Stationery Brand

  • Her brand, "Design Snowbay," offers a variety of products featuring the warm landscapes she captured during travels to New York and Paris.

Mom&I: Is there a special reason you chose New York as the main stage for your artistic endeavors?

New York is the global center of art, and I have dreamed of this place since childhood. I still hold the goal of exhibiting my work in New York museums and can't bear to leave this city. (smiles)

Mom&I: There must be many stories related to your work. Could you share a memorable one?

I often think, "Photography is waiting." Once, while shooting a paper boat series at a lake in Long Island, several paper boats sank repeatedly. Though some suggested using waterproof models, I found the sight of these fragile boats afloat profoundly reflective of life. When a beautiful sunset unfolded, it validated the waiting, capturing the ephemeral yet beautiful moment.

Future Aspirations

As HeeJung Cho continues the LOVE PROJECT, she plans to expand the theme to include marginalized groups, minority rights, and environmental issues. Her forthcoming photo book, "Beloved," aims to explore these stories. Additionally, she hopes to visit themes like the "Norwegian Wood."
