I never imagined myself as a wife, let alone a mother. While I once held romantic notions of someday having a family, these dreams seemed as distant as my childhood aspirations of becoming a model—an unlikely possibility given my physical appearance. Despite the challenges, we must find ways to enjoy life, especially during occasions like Christmas and New Year’s, when starting to indulge at 11 AM becomes socially acceptable.
When McKenzie was younger, we avoided staying out past her bedtime and neglected our social life. However, now that she's 27 months old, we believe it's more beneficial for her to experience the excitement of festivities. It also provides a much-needed pause for us as parents from debates over the best diaper crème—and a brief escape from dreaming about McKenzie's nightly sleep patterns. Let me gently remind you that I haven’t enjoyed a full night’s sleep for the past two years.
To ensure a successful evening with your toddler, make certain they enjoy a restful nap to prevent overtiredness. Toddlers, like parents, harbor numerous emotions. Allow them to revel in the festivities and express grievances over the many "injustices" they perceive, such as “Mom doesn’t let me play with toilet water” or “I can’t eat a battery.” Keep an eye out for straws; they’re a hit with toddlers and reduce spills. Encouraging dessert exploration can further elevate their mood, although I cannot guarantee an early bedtime afterwards. Don't forget pajamas and a toothbrush; McKenzie’s bedtime routine involves tooth-brushing and changing into pajamas before leaving a party, ensuring a seamless transfer from car seat to bed.
Regardless of her bedtime, McKenzie consistently awakens at the same time each morning. I expect no sympathy from her, even if my own night was marred by few hours of rest or a champagne headache from the open bar. She demands my morning presence at 7 AM sharp and continually pushes me to optimize my physical stamina. Let us not forget the good ol' days and continue the celebration—we truly deserve it, don’t you agree?
