Colgate, historically associated with New York City and the northeastern white elite, has become increasingly diverse in terms of nationality, race, religion, and culture.

History and Academics

Founded as a Baptist seminary in 1819, Colgate University is the 66th oldest institution in the United States. Initially named Madison University in 1846, it was renamed in 1890 in honor of the Colgate-Palmolive family's contributions. The university became coeducational in 1970.

Colgate emphasizes a 'Core Curriculum' designed to equip students with critical thinking and intellectual debate skills across its 54 majors and minors. Notable programs include biology, psychology, and chemistry in the natural sciences, and history, economics, politics, international relations, sociology, and anthropology in the social sciences. The humanities are also popular, especially English, art, and art history.

Balancing Academics and Athletics

Colgate University, part of NCAA Division 1, boasts a high graduation rate of 98% for its athletes. The institution is committed to nurturing well-rounded individuals, with more than 80% of students participating in sports. The university excels in golf, football, and ice hockey.

Financial Aid and Admissions

Colgate University attracts students globally, with applicants from 138 countries. The average SAT score for entrants is 1416, and the GPA averages at 3.8/4.0. Admission considers GPA, SAT scores, class rank, recommendations, essays, and community involvement.

The annual tuition is approximately $51,000, with total costs reaching around $65,000 including accommodation and other fees. On average, students receive financial aid amounting to $50,000 annually, ranking fourth among U.S. institutions for financial support.

Successful Alumni Network

Colgate University is distinguished for its high-earning graduates, ranking fourth in a CNN Money report. Forbes lists Colgate as one of the top five non-Ivy League institutions for graduates' financial success. The university fosters a robust alumni network, facilitating career and social engagement through various events.

Notable alumni include former U.S. Secretary of State William P. Rogers, ex-White House Deputy Chief of Staff Kristie Canegallo, former Standard Chartered CEO Bill Winters, and former Moody's CEO Raymond McDaniel Jr. Other renowned figures are filmmaker Charles Adams and former Chelsea FC Chairman Bruce Buck.
