Gomi Korean Wine Bar Opens Its Doors to Enthusiasts

New Restaurant: Warmth Like an Invitation to an Old Friend's House

Before entering the restaurant for an interview, I peered through the window. Inside, the owner, Raphael, was smiling warmly as he swept the floor, preparing to open the venue. His welcoming demeanor and the warm barley tea he served melted away my usual pre-interview tension. Have you ever watched the drama Shinya Shokudo? It’s about people sharing pieces of their lives through food and storytelling. Spending time here felt akin to being in that drama. With the soft rain outside, the ground dampened, and my friend-like host sharing delightful stories of wine and life—it’s a vibe that must be experienced firsthand. This might be the first time in New York I felt so at home in a restaurant. One patron even called it the home they found in New York.

Situated in Manhattan's East Village, Gomi Korean Wine Bar is run by chef and sommelier Raphael. It offers a blend of Brazilian and Korean cuisines. Isn’t the fusion intriguing? This place defies a single definition. With wines from various countries, it stands as a professional wine bar complemented by delicious meals that showcase Korean and Brazilian culinary processes. Gomi Korean Wine Bar continues to create its unique category unseen elsewhere in New York.

Embracing a Dream with Community and Family

Raphael, owner and culinary artist, graciously agreed to this interview. Upon visiting their website, I discovered videos made by loyal patrons.

"My patrons created the website and videos for me," Raphael shared. "I have no experience in advertising, but locals who frequent Gomi decided to spread the word."

Raphael’s journey to opening Gomi began after years in the fashion industry. Born in Korea, his family immigrated to Brazil, where they worked in fashion. After a career in New York's garment district, retirement led him to travel and ultimately pursue his true passion: food and conversation.

"I love cooking and hosting gatherings, both for their culinary and social aspects," he explained. He found a perfect spot in the East Village to realize his dream.

Comprehensive Wine Selection with a Personal Touch

Raphael’s dedication to unique wines is noteworthy. Gomi eschews commercial wines, instead focusing on World-World wines, which align with his sustainability ethos.

"I choose wines from small, boutique wineries that cultivate their vineyards organically," he explained. "Each bottle here is carefully selected, including exclusive vintages unavailable elsewhere in the U.S."

Engaging patrons, Raphael recommends wines tailored to their moods and personalities, creating connections through thoughtful service.

A Family Affair

Running Gomi is a family venture. Raphael manages nearly every aspect, while aid from family, like his sister during busy times, ensures smooth operations. Though his daughters are less involved, their support remains implicit.

"I tell guests to be patient—it’s a family-run place where dishes may take time but will make them feel at home," Raphael shared.

Beyond Dining: A Passion for Nature and Travel

Aside from gastronomy, Raphael cherishes hiking and travel, visiting untouched natural locales like Utah and Montana with friends. He infuses this passion into the restaurant’s ambiance, sharing travel stories with guests.

Culinary and Wine Recommendations for Valentine's Day

Raphael suggests the Wine Tasting Menu starting at $20, recommending a diverse selection tailored to taste. Among the highlights is a unique Pet-nat Champagne.

For lovers of Brazilian fare, the Picanha Fatiada offers Brazilian-style top sirloin, perfectly paired with a food-friendly Portuguese wine.

Gomi Korean Wine Bar warmly invites you to explore its notable offerings and immerse yourself in exceptional culinary and oenological experiences.
